Stretch FilmStretch film, also known as stretch wrap or pallet wrap, is a highly elastic plastic film that is applied to a product or load for stabilization, unitization, and protection during storage and transportation. The film is made from various types of plastics, most commonly linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), or a blend of LLDPE and LDPE.

Types of Stretch Film
Hand Stretch Film
Hand stretch film is a specific film designed for hand-wrapping pallets. It is best for lower-capacity packaging operations and slower turnaround. Designed with a hand-wrapping method in mind, the hand stretch film rolls typically weigh about 10 pounds when full.
Machine Stretch Film
Machine stretch film specifically fits onto automatic and semi-automatic stretch wrapping machines. These come in much larger rolls than hand stretch film does, as machines have a larger capacity and don’t have to worry about injuries or overextending themselves from lifting heavy stretch film rolls. Machine stretch film is best for use in a machine such as a turntable, rotary arm, rotary ring, or horizontal stretch wrapping machines.
Cast Stretch Film
Cast stretch film is made using the process called case extrusion, which is when a thermoplastic material is continuously propelled through a flat die onto a chilled roll. This film type comes in different thicknesses that result from how fast the casting roll pulls the plastic away from the die during the case extrusion. This film type is very transparent, which allows the wrappers and shippers to see through the film to the wrapped product. This is good for operations that send multiple different products in one shipment since the product packaging will still be easily visible through the film. Although it doesn’t have the most reliable tear resistance, it does stretch more easily. This is best for products that don’t require maximum protection as this type of film may break more often than other films.
Blown Stretch Film
Blown stretch film results from the process of blown extrusion, which is when melted plastic is pumped through a circular die. This creates a thin, walled tube. Once air is allowed into the tube, the stretch tube can move to the desired width. Once this is accomplished, cool air is blown onto the film to cool it. This also works to make the film tougher and more tear-resistant than other film types. This film type is ideal for wrapping loads with sharp edges or more delicate products. One drawback of this type of film is that the film is much more opaque than other films, so it’s difficult to see through with ease.
Pre-Stretch Film
Pre-stretch film is a film that undergoes stretching before it reaches the products on the pallet. It is stretched, sometimes, as close as possible to its resistance point—just before the point of breaking—and then applied to the load. This means that the amount of stretch film necessary per shipment is less, as the film can cover more area after stretching. High Density Polyethylene
HDPE is commonly known as hard, soft rubber, with natural color, cylindrical or oblate particles, insoluble in common solvents at room temperature, but can swell when exposed to aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, and halogenated hydrocarbons for a long time, slightly above 70 ℃ Soluble in toluene and acetic acid. Low Density Polyethylene
HDPE low-density polyethylene (commonly known as soft rubber) is a white resin with a waxy feel. Its structural characteristics are non-linear. The molecular weight is generally 100000~500000. Therefore, compared with medium-density and high-density polyethylene, it has a higher Low crystallinity and softening point, good flexibility, elongation, electrical insulation, transparency, and high impact strength.
Linear Low-Density Polyethylene
Since the molecular structures of LLDPE and LDPE are significantly different, the properties are also different. Compared with LDPE, LLDPE has excellent environmental stress crack resistance and electrical insulation, higher heat resistance, impact resistance, and puncture resistance. It is very flexible and elongates under stress. It can make thinner films with better environmental stress-cracking resistance. It has good resistance to chemicals. It has good electrical properties. However, it is more challenging to process than LDPE, has a lower gloss, and has a narrower range for heat sealing.

How to Choose Stretch Film
Load Characteristics

Stretch Ratio

How to Use Stretch Film
Prepare the Load

Choose the Right Film
Select a stretch film that is appropriate for the weight and nature of your load. Consider the required stretch ratio, tensile strength, and cling properties.
Start Wrapping
Begin at the bottom of the pallet or from one side, depending on the wrapping pattern you have chosen. Apply the film’s edge to the surface of the load, ensuring it adheres well.
Apply Tension
As you wrap the film around the load, apply tension evenly. Over-tightening can cause the film to tear, while under-tightening may not provide sufficient support. Most stretch film machines allow you to adjust the tension settings.
Complete the Wrapping Pattern
Continue to wrap the film around the load, following the chosen pattern. Ensure that each layer overlaps the previous one by at least 50%. Corners should be reinforced to prevent tears.
Cut and Seal the Film
Once the desired number of layers have been applied, use a stretch wrap dispenser or scissors to cut the film. Some automated systems will seal the end of the film automatically. Make sure the end is secured and not dangling, which could catch on something during handling.
Inspect the Load
After wrapping, inspect the load to ensure it is adequately secured and the film is not overly tight or loose. Adjust if necessary.
Store Properly
If not immediately used, store the stretch film in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain its properties.
